Simply put, 'Lab Girl' has been one of the most rewarding and exciting reads of the past few years.

In the style of both a memoir, as well as a bit of scientific primer on plants, Jahren details in a vivid style her life story and it's intwinement with her research. It's introduced me more formally into the interesting world of plants -- something that's strange to write, but it's hard to underscore enough -- as well as the really unique experiences of a female scientist and her journey through both teaching and research.

I often found the perspective's Jahren brought forward wholly original and eye-opening. She details the thrill of discovery, academic funding, being a female scientist, being a mother -- I can't say I've read another book quite like it (the only one nominally close is Oliver Sacks' 'On The Move').

I can't recommend it enough.
